Singing To My Kids

Just so you know, bad singing can reflect a lot of emotion too.

Today I had to drop off some papers for oldest daughter.   She came out of her place of business and talked with me for a few minutes.   When I left she decided to walk around the building on the outside, to go in another entrance.

I got in my car and Bruno Mars’ song “Just The Way You Are” was playing.   I’ve always sung to my kids.   More so when they were little.   Though every now and then I pop something out at them.    As babies they loved me singing to them.  As adults it humors them.   I know this song is a guy singing to a girl.   But part of it can be for any girl any where from any one who loves her.  As I pulled up to the sidewalk she was walking down I turned up the volume and sung loudly and poorly:

“When I see your face

There’s not a thing that I would change

Cause girl, you’re amazing

Just the way you are.

And when you smile

The whole world stops and stares for awhile

Cause girl, you’re amazing

Just the way you are.”

She turned and laughed and smiled at me as I was singing.  A little embarrassed but I’m  pretty sure she was pretty pleased as well.  She ought to know by now how amazing I think she is.

I had to drive away.   But I couldn’t just sing that to her.   I had to sing it to someone else.   And while the boy sung to the girl this mom pressed the younger daughter’s automatic dial button on my cell phone while I sat at a red light.   I hear her answer at the perfect time for me to start singing:

“When I see your face

There’s not a thing that I would change

Cause girl, you’re amazing

Just the way you are.

And when you smile

The whole world stops and stares for awhile

Cause girl, you’re amazing

Just the way you are.”

I turned off the radio.   She was laughing.   She wondered if I had meant to call her because all she heard was music until I started singing.

No matter where they go in this world my singing to them will never cease.   I might not sing well, or in tune.   But my emotion certainly makes up for it.
