The Truth Of Friendship

Another hike today.  With an long time (and old) friend.

I took a picture of her and said “oh my gosh, you are beautiful!  You’ll love this picture!”

She looked and giggled.  I don’t like the word “giggled” but it’s what she does.   She told me to give her my phone so she could take a picture of me.

We looked at it.  Started hiking.  She made a comment about the pictures.  I told her she was photogenic and that picture was beautiful (again).

Without pause she said “you didn’t look beautiful”.   Pause for effect.  “You look athletic”.

Anybody need a friend?

I am so very much kidding.   I wouldn’t give her up.  For anything.

Here’s the thing.

Without even thinking about it she said the very thing that I would have wanted to hear.  I feel happier, and more complimented, that she told me I look athletic (though now she’s trying to say she called me “Sporty Spice”-she did not).

I see my energy and ability, willingness and need to be active, as beautiful.  To me my beauty isn’t in how I look.  It’s in how I act, who I am, and what I mean to others.

We all need friends who know us well enough to be truthful.  Without having to worry about saying it ‘right’.   But just sharing our truths with us.

I can’t believe you wrote about friendship too! I have a friend who once said to me, “Oh wow you look great, but you so don’t do sexy”. 🙂

Uhm… …”(and old) friend”? 🙂 But seriously, you are so fortunate to have such a friend. (And frankly, all this talk about “PC” is driving me nuts.)

    • 😉 Of course you caught that Koji! 😉

You’re right, the PC talk is so difficult sometimes. Especially when it’s used to avoid being truthful.

ANd I am very lucky in the ‘friend’ category of life.

Many smart people think that looking athletic is indeed looking beautiful, Colleen. Note to friend: The ‘you look athletic/ would have stood on its own, you know …

    • Chuckling out loud right now. It would have stood on it’s own and I wish I had thought to say that. But if that’s all she had said I wouldn’t have laughed then and now thinking about it. 😉

How incredibly blessed you are to have a friend like that, CM. They are the best kind of friends to have in life, those who speak freely and truly. I think “you look athletic” is a fantastic compliment. It reflects all kinds of beauty, including your hard work. That’s a compliment I wouldn’t mind hearing. 😀

You said it Colleen, (although your friend did really 😉 ) the truth and nothing but, means that we can rely on someone’s word. And I feel that beauty is in how we co-exist, it’s not how we look, but how we look at the world and those about us, openly… Just as your words above reach out and show what a lovely person you are. (You’re not blushing again are you? Sheesh!!) 🙂 … xPenx

    • Uhm……yes, I am. 🙂

I like how you say this. It IS about how we co-exist. And it’s wonderful to have people in my life that I can be honest with and get honesty from. And there’s kindness and understanding in their honesty. It’s not brutal. It’s wonderful.

And you’re very wise too … I think that beauty has become such an obsession those days. We all want to feel beautiful … at times and there is nothing wrong in that at all, we are girls aren’t we and we are suppose to feel pretty.
I’m totally with you – true friendship and partnership sees another beauty in us that is on a different level and means so much more. Love your little post.
