During my time as an investigator for adult protective services I had people stare at me (someone once thought I was FBI), want to touch my hair (yes I always let them), question my gender (I do look like my dad and my brothers), question my sexuality, and a few other odd questions that followed some staring. I didn’t mind. I always answered whatever their question was. It opened up nice conversations,. If they were that curious to know (or had lost boundaries/filters) I didn’t mind talking to them. I have been fascinated by our differences. I do catch myself staring, to see them. I never meant any disrespect and always hoped to have conversation. 🙂 People are beautiful. Why wouldn’t we look????
I’m glad you had that attitude. I hope those little boys didn’t mind me staring.
Good to know that when we meet, should I feel so inclined, I’ll be permitted to touch your hair. 😛
Love this. Reminds me of the song “How Beautiful You Are” by the Cure, one of my favorite songs. In the song, the woman being stared at has it all wrong.

So beautiful! What lovely lines… “I stare because you are not me, so beautifully not me. I take comfort in seeing you….”

I remember, somewhat to my shame, staring at two young boys who were half black, half Asian. They were such a fascinating mix, I couldn’t help myself.

I wish we all had that attitude. Maybe if we looked at one another more closely we would see more beauty.

I think I am going to look even more boldly from now on – and be the gift of seeing the best I can.
